Floral prints, carpets, gold and silver accents, white painted wood furniture and color fabrics... do you find it familiar? Probably you do, that mixture of elements and textures brings to our mind the old-fashioned house of our parents and grandparents. Now imagine them with a contemporary twist... change the small soft flowers for strong geometric games, the crude tapestry for modern lines with saturated colors and apply worn gold and silver in decorative items that can range from religious representations to plants and animals. Welcome to 2015!
It's not a joke. All styles are cyclical and architecture and interiors that we hate few years ago are back with a fresher and less cluttered feel. It's time to say goodbye to minimalism and give space to the color; forget for a moment the impersonal white and neutral colors of corporate outfits and remember your childhood crayons and modeling clay. White lovers did see the color as a serious disease so it is important that you eliminate all that you know from it and start from scratch. White does not necessarily give more light to your spaces as red doesn’t make them look warm; between black and white there are many shades of gray as mixtures we can apply to our space using different colors.
As discussed in A little bit of color, a palette that Pantone presented for interiors in 2015 is called Past Traces and is an interesting mixture of neutral and saturated colors that you may have never imagined together: Pastel Parchment, Peach Beige, Cameo Green, Faded Denim, Atmosphere, Marine Blue, Dusty Cedar and Cedar Green. Their names can overwhelm us but all the things we can do with them are just amazing. We just have to apply some simple rules and do not forget that blue will be the 2015 color. Do you like what we did in the picture?
When we mix colors is very important to define which represents the most our lifestyle to give preference in both finishes and interior design and then find the color palette that contains it. If we use a color that has not been selected for this year, we may have a hard time finding it in stores and the result may be a bit more expensive that we think, besides we do not want to be out on the latest trends. We should not be afraid to make combinations of textures, materials and colors ... architects and designers usually work in comfort zones and prefer neutral shades, too.
Whether you chose a color, it's time to figure out how you're going to apply it. If you choose to apply it in the tapestry of your furniture, you need to look for textures and patterns that contain different shades to make games and remember not to clutter your space in just one color. The other colors in the palette can be used to accompany and complement your space; if your furniture will be blue like ours, try to mix different tapestries and remember you can forget a little about plain colors and get riskier with prints and patterns. Also, try not to retake that color for walls or floors and choose another one you like; in the example we use the Dusty Cedar for the walls and chose a lines tapestry in the wall that gives more color to the room without leaving the palette that we chose; the combination has more fun and it’s more personalized. For the floor, nothing better than a cut pile carpet with a nice velvety feel to the touch; such textures give an informal character to our spaces which become the friends and family favorite for meetings.
Finally, look for accessories that go with your space. If you are looking for tables, the best option is prematurely aged light wood; you can find something in stores that surely suit your taste or it can be a very entertaining task to adapt and work with tables you already have at home. You cannot left aside the accessories; decorative elements will provide a more personal touch to your space and they complement the color palette you chose. Remember that in addition to the decor, you should always include functional objects such as lamps, ashtrays, books and cushions, all of them will represent you and make your space an unforgettable place.
